Notable nights

The total solar eclipse of 1961 over Split

On the morning of 15 February 1961 the shadow of the Moon crossed Europe from Bordeaux over the south of France, Italy and the Adriatic to Sarajevo, Sofia and Bucharest.

Over Split the Sun was gone from 08:40:25 to 08:42:35, 17° above the south-eastern horizon. Mercury stood to its left, and higher in the south Jupiter and Saturn shone side by side: three days later they passed closest, less than a quarter of a degree apart.

In the picture, where the planets are drawn 250 times larger than they look, Jupiter covers most of Saturn. Between 1900 and 2050 it is the only total eclipse of the Sun over Split.
