Notable nights

The sky of the Moon landing, 1969

At 21:56 in Houston on 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped from the ladder of the lunar module onto the Moon. At that minute the Moon itself stood 23° above the west-south-western horizon over Mission Control, a third of it lit.

The landing site, the Sea of Tranquillity, lay in the lit part, not far from the line between day and night: the astronauts had landed in the lunar morning, with the Sun low in their sky.

Jupiter stood just to the right of the Moon, and Mars in the south, beside Antares. The Moon was 385,582 kilometres away; its light reached Houston in 1.3 seconds.
