Notable nights

Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997

In the spring of 1997 Comet Hale-Bopp shone brighter than all but a few stars, evening after evening, for weeks. It may be the most widely seen comet of the twentieth century.

On 1 April, the day it passed closest to the Sun, it stood 27° above the north-western horizon over Zakopane at 20:30, its tail pointing up and away from the Sun, which had set below it.

It was seen with the naked eye for a record eighteen months. Mars was up as well, in the east-south-east, on the other side of the sky.
