Jupiter and the rising Orion in the east over Berlin, late in the evening of 9 November 1989.

Notable nights

The night the Berlin Wall fell

At about 23:30 on 9 November 1989 the guards at Bornholmer Straße opened the barrier, and thousands of East Berliners walked into the West. Few looked up. This is what stood over them.

In the east Jupiter shone among the stars of Gemini, and Orion was climbing out of the haze, Betelgeuse first. Behind the crowd, in the south-west, stood a bright Moon a few days short of full, near its closest to the Earth.

Nothing in this sky was rare. Its Moon and planets, though, have never stood this way again, and never will: no sky happens twice.
