The total solar eclipse of 1927 in England

In the early morning of 29 June 1927 the shadow of the Moon crossed Britain from North Wales over Southport and the Yorkshire Dales to Hartlepool: the first total eclipse of the Sun over the British mainland since 1724.

Over Giggleswick the Sun was hidden for about twenty seconds at 06:24, 12° above the east-north-eastern horizon. Rain clouds covered most of the path; here they broke a few minutes before totality.

The Astronomer Royal, Sir Frank Dyson, had chosen Giggleswick for its weather records and watched from a field by the school chapel. Britain saw its next total eclipse in 1999, over Cornwall.
