Notable nights

The total solar eclipse of 1999

At 12:40 on 11 August 1999 the Moon covered the whole Sun over Salzburg. For two minutes the day went dark, the corona stood around the black disc, and Venus and Mercury came out at noon.

The Moon's shadow had come from the Atlantic over Cornwall, northern France, Stuttgart and Munich. After Salzburg it crossed Austria to Hungary, Romania and Turkey, and ended at sunset over the Bay of Bengal.

No total eclipse of the Sun reaches Austria again until 3 September 2081, and then only its west, over Vorarlberg and Tyrol.
