The red, eclipsed Moon low in the east-north-east over Vienna in the early night.

Notable nights

The blood moon of New Year's Eve 2028

On the last evening of 2028 the full Moon will pass through the shadow of the Earth. Over Vienna it rises at 15:58, just before the shadow reaches it, and turns red in the early night.

It will be wholly in the shadow from 17:16 to 18:28. At 17:52, the middle of the eclipse, it will stand 15° above the east-north-eastern horizon, between Castor and Pollux on its left and Orion rising on its right. Saturn will shine high in the south-east.

By midnight, as the year turns, the Moon will be full and bright again, high in the south.
