Notable nights

The annular eclipse of 2028 over the Algarve

On the afternoon of 26 January 2028 the Moon will pass right across the Sun over the south of Portugal and Spain. It will be a little too far from us to cover all of it, so a ring of sunlight will stay around it: an annular eclipse.

Over Faro the ring will last from 16:51:50 to 16:58:45, 9° above the west-south-western horizon. Mercury and Mars will stand above it, Venus higher still. The ring can be seen across the Algarve and Andalusia, from Lagos to Valencia; Lisbon and Madrid will see only part of the Sun covered.

The Sun will set at 17:50 with the Moon still in front of part of it. Between 1900 and 2050 no other ring of fire, and no total eclipse, reaches Faro.
