Notable nights

Mars at its closest, 2003

On 27 August 2003 Mars came closer to the Earth than at any time in almost 60,000 years: 55.8 million kilometres. With the Moon new and out of sight, it was the brightest thing in the night sky.

Over Lisbon at 23:30 it stood 26° above the south-eastern horizon, among the faint stars of Aquarius, with Fomalhaut lower down. Its light was barely more than three minutes on the way.

It will come closer still only on 28 August 2287.
