Notable nights

The Great Conjunction of 2020

On the evening of the winter solstice, Jupiter and Saturn stood closer together in our sky than at any time since 1623. To the eye they were almost one star.

Over Vienna the pair stood 8° above the south-western horizon at 17:20, in the last blue of the evening. The Moon, almost at first quarter, was higher in the south. In the picture, where the planets are drawn 250 times larger than they look, Jupiter covers Saturn: only the tips of its rings show.

They were close only as seen from here. Saturn was nearly twice as far away as Jupiter: its light had been 90 minutes on the way, Jupiter's 49. Because it came a few days before Christmas, many called it the Christmas star. The two will stand this close again in March 2080.
